Power and Perspective

Creative Writing Contest

Prompts and Prizes

1. Disease and illness are powerful; they influence our lives biologically, emotionally,  spiritually, socially, and economically. For example, we refer to dealing with cancer in terms of doing battle, using language of war and fighting to describe overcoming the disease. Emotions surrounding disease and illness are powerful as well. This can be demonstrated by how a sense of powerlessness and anger in the early AIDS epidemic, turned to action and empowerment with the formation of the organization ACT UP.  Write a short story, poem, or narrative that explores the power of disease or illness.

Prize - Gift basket from Shelf Indulgence Used Book Cafe

2. Imagine you are a mosquito during an epidemic (rapid spread of a disease).  Write a short story, poem, or humour piece on the epidemic, from the perspective of the mosquito.  How would its role as a vector (transmitter of an infectious disease) affect its perspective? Participants may write from the perspective of a vector of another disease with the potential to cause an epidemic.
